Books

Reading has slowly inched its way into becoming a priority to me, I read everyday. I once heard a quote along the lines of “if you have the ability to read but don’t, you may as well be illiterate”. That struck me as harsh, even somewhat rude, but as I thought about it more I changed my perspective. I thought, “What a gift it is to be able to read and to not take of advantage such a gift would be a pity.” If it takes a genius, grade-A mind ten years to write one book, and you could comfortably read and digest the contents in a weeks time, would you have gained 10 years of knowledge in a week? Perhaps not, but I’m sure something was picked up along the way! Yet another reason to read and whet your knowledge.

Climbing

I started my climbing pursuit in a gym in Rotorua, New Zealand. There was a deal for unlimited climbing for summer break for $90 NZD. From there my passion for climbing has blossomed into what it is today. I primarily climb sport routes, but have recently been climbing some trad routes and practicing placements.

Fly fishing

I got into Fly Fishing thanks to my friend Jake and his dad when I was 19 or so. I always enjoyed watching the smooth methodical movements of fly fishers casting and when I had the opportunity to try it out, you could say I bit. The peaceful waters and natural environment help me reach a flow state and just like that the day passes.

hiking

Hiking is a great activity that I began at a young age with the family. I enjoy the variation of hikes that I’ve found and will continue to do. From the slow aesthetic hikes along a gentle river to the several mile (or even days) missions that take you away from all of society to a quiet secluded place.

Neat Stuff

Podcasts

I have been into podcasts for a couple years now and haven’t ventured to far away from the origins where I began. Tangentially Speaking is the show where it all started for me and then to The Kyle Thiermann Show to The Joe Rogan Experience, The Monkeytooth Podcast and Mountain and Prairie. They all involve interviews with badass people, how they came to be, what they’re doing, current topics, neat facts and what the future may hold. I like to learn the stories behind people, their driving force and their missions. Some people have done the craziest shit and it makes me feel like I need to get out of my comfort zone and do more too. Plus podcasts are great to listen to on runs, commuting to work or while cooking (As long as no one interrupts the show).

Cooking

“I’ve been cooking since I could see the stove top” that’s how I got my first cooking gig, my second and it will be included for my third. My mother is an excellent cook who’s passion for food has bled over to my life and instilled me with not only a passion for cooking, but pride. I love cooking at home, low stress and great results (most of the time). I love to share the food I make and see people smile. Cooking is an artwork that you can share and eat with your friends, family and strangers. Everyone appreciates good food. Food is also a root source of health. Diet is a huge factor in your daily life and long-term health. I’m not one who likes to feel bloated, sluggish or uncomfortably full so I maintain a diet and cook in a way that will support how I want to feel. Being in control of one component of your health is something to take advantage of.
